Don't speculate ... enjoy Schumacher while you can

Eddie Jordan’s comments about Michael Schumacher’s future don’t really offer anything new to a debate which has been going on since the first race of the season, and which escalated once it became clear the much-touted tweaks made by Mercedes ahead of the European season were not going to catapult him to the front of the grid.

The reality is nothing will happen before the end of the season. Schumacher will continue to do his best, offering his considerable experience to his team to help them develop and plan for 2011, and will be battling as hard as he can for the minor points.

Only when the dust has settled in Abu Dhabi will any announcement be made, and even then don’t hold your breath. In the meantime, speculation can only be that, and denials by his manager and team are just as meaningless – what else are they supposed to say?

Whatever his large band of loyal supporters might have believed, Schumacher did not expect to return and take up where he left off. The question now is whether he still has the appetite if faced with the prospects of another season of mid-field mediocrity.

In the meantime, fans should not waste time speculating on the future but should savour one of the greats of Formula One while they can. After all, if Jordan turns out to be right, he might not be around that much longer.

Michael has indeed been the mark that drivers will shoot for for years to come. We should feel proud to have been around to see the height of his racing accomplishments. Thanks Michael.

Sabine Kehm's comments on the matter make more sense than Eddie's Jordan's do. And besides, to quit at the end of this season would not fit Schumacher's personality at all.

This broken record has been spinning all year.

Correct....Rumour, speculation and PR statements can never be believed. For all we know certain driver managers were visiting the Mercedes motor-home to enquire about the reserve driver role vacate recently by Heidfeld. I'm sure that many drivers who are in a poor position to retain a race seat for 2011, would jump at a chance to a least remain in the sport as a test driver. Speculation is futile presently.

I enjoy F1 that much more with Michael S racing. I would be thrilled to watch his racing skills, and therefor F1, even if Michael was racing everyone else on his moped. Win or lose he is still the "BEST" and despite what a few uninformed people may think he is one of the nicest, generous and most socially responsible of all sport figures. These statements are from first hand experience.

I´m quite sure that Michael knows that the first year would be difficult, even for him and so Mercedes. Last year Brown success was a result of Honda development, and it didn´t came overnight, it took years, so why we can expect right away success, when you are out of the sport for 3 years.

Posted by Hitendra Vasudeo on 17/09/2010

No idea why the people who are out of the game now like Jordon, Lauda, Irvine keep talking.

Unless they want to make public appearances.

We by now know the problems of Mercedes.

Let me come back on the incident of rubens and schumi.

it was rubens who decided to go to the wall and michael was defending his position for point.

so much space was on the other side. why rubens did not choose the other side.

unnecessary these retired people are making noise.

Posted by Muti ur Rahman on 17/09/2010

i think eddie jordan doesnt have anything else to concentrate on.... michael has been the talk of all the retire ppl. actually they cant blve tht michael is competitive in that ill-handling car which is not designed for his driving style bcoz every driver has his own requirement which are incorporated in the car to suite his driving. one shld aprreciate michael to be close to rosberg pace. he is only few tenths slow. i wud really like to see michael on the grid in 2011. I wish him all the best.

Anybody expecting Schumacher to come back and be successful right away are kidding themselves. How long did it take for Michael to build up Ferrari when he was at his peak? Three years! Guess what - that's exactly as long as he has signed a contract with Mercedes for. Eddie Jordan has a very big mouth, and sometimes he opens it before he's had time to think about what he's saying. If Schu doesn't do better next year, I'll stand corrected. But if he does do better - don't be surprised!

Posted by gsprings on 17/09/2010

sad thing is,if he quit today,no one would miss him with the tight championship battle thats going on up front, says a lot about his season so far

Posted by Tom on 17/09/2010

I really want Michael to openly tell us what's going on. They must know within the team what is troubeling him, why Rosberg is getting the better of him. Much have been said about the understeering Mercedes, and that it doesn't suit his driving style at all. I truelly hope that he stay's around for 2011 to show everybody that this is the case, but something should be said from the Schumacher camp, everyone is speculating on this...

However, if he quits, I would guess it comes down to motivation, and Mercedes 2011 not being high on promise. Not down to Rosberg. I think he would beat him honestly in the proper car. I hope he stays around to show us...

Posted by Carter on 17/09/2010

So let's see 500 million a year budget for 10yrs, a kill switch on the number 2 cars...beaten by drivers who had to beat their own teamate on the track and in the garage...hummm I would have to say that we saw a great driver with the best luck in a 10yr time period...this year just proves it Rose out drove him and didn't cry about tires or poor set up...next year will be different, big money from Merc, a winter of testing to build a car that MS likes and RB will find a new loop hole to explote!

Posted by Sundar on 17/09/2010

he is the greatest f1 driver so far and being a Schumi's fan for so many years I would not like to see him quit. There is no reason too. He is doing great for the first season and car requires considerable improvement. He has not been able to get a quick lap in quali and hence behind his team mate. In the race, Schumi performance has been better compared to his team mate except for the fact Nico is higher in order by virtue of quick lap in quali. Nico has not challenged top cars or drivers.
Agree, lets savour the moments he is back....hoping to see him bounce back...

I have always had alot of respect for Eddie Jordan but since he has become a pundit for BBC, I find his comments often rub me up the wrong way. Maybe he still holds a tiny bit of resentment towards Michael from when he was stolen from under his feet by Bennetton in 91. Even though Michael isnt currently getting the results he, and no doubt 90% of his fans hoped had for, he is still driving the car as hard as he can for every lap of the race, often fighting for 1 or 2 points. Someone planning to leave the sport would be finishing further back as their hunger to keep fighting would already be gone.

Bring on 2011 and hopefully a car more befitting of his undoubted talent, it would be a HUGE shame for his comeback to be blighted by a car that wasnt able to perform to the level required to go for a win, or better yet, the championship.

Regardless, he will still always be the yardstick by which all other drivers are measured.

Thanks Michael :)

Schumacher won 3 times on the first year, 1996, with Ferrari and the year after, 1997, threw away the championship with Villeneuve at the last race.
On 1998 lost because of the crash with Coulthard at SPA.
On 1999 broke his leg and his team mate nearly won it.
So it took just 1 year to build a competitive car for Ferrari.
This time is different, it's like driving a F1 for the first time.

Posted by Chris on 18/09/2010

Eddie Jordan is a has been in F1, and he knows it better than anyone else. What he's doing by shooting off his mouth is trying to build up his "stock price" in F1. He gets to speak during BBC's commercials, what he really wants is Martin Brundle's or Jonathan's gig, good luck Eddie!

Brawn is a genius, if you studied his achievements in F1 you would know that. In F1 and IRL, if you start the year with a dog of a car it will never get you to the front. Everyone up and down pit lane knows that, but Brawn is so brilliant, his know-how is keeping those 2 machines in the fight for points.

Schumacher will get to the podium again! ..someday, just wait and see :-)

Top of the GRID or not I just love to see michael in F1 Car .

Thanks michael for fulfilling our wish !

He is not Eddie Jodan.... "he is Idiot Jordan"

Posted by John B on 18/09/2010

Stirling Moss would probably do better in an F1 car than the average 80-year old, but does that mean he should get a drive? I don't care about how well he is coping given the circumstances... fact is Nick Heidfeld would have scored more points than Schu so far and Mercedes were idiots for not putting him in there! Seven titles or not - he's not one of the best 24 drivers in the world right now.

Posted by Salman Bahadur on 18/09/2010

I don’t care what Eddie Jordan says about Michael. All I can say is that it has been a privilege to see Schumi in action again. He is truly a great champion whose commitment to Formula One can never be questioned and I also don’t care if people don’t consider him the BEST, for me he is a maestro, a true legend. As far as his future is concerned, I think he ll give another go next season and will see where things end and might not opt for the third year with Mercedes. But till then just savor the moments with this great man.

Posted by SchuFan on 18/09/2010

I like how everyone is an expert without having won 7 or 6 or 5 or 4 or 3 or 2 or even ONE F1 championship!! You can hate Schu all you want but he's the ONLY reason why I watch F1 now. I stopped when he retired and only started watching again this season. I don't care who else wins or that it is a "tight 5 way championship" if Schu retires tomorrow I will stop watching tomorrow!! This is the case for a LOT of others that feel the same way (F1 ratings were going down until Shu came back!) and if we don't watch anymore Jordan, Lauda and all others will blab to less and less fans on the airwaves and stadiums. Just think about that! Go Shu!

Posted by Ste K on 18/09/2010

I'm glad Schumacher came back. He's really shown the world what sort of racing driver he really is when there's no team orders allowed, when he has to use equal equipment to his team mate rather than be the outright number 1, and when there's no refuelling to help him. The excuses for a so called "great driver" are poor, and the "over taking master" has passed less cars in racing than any other driver. I really hope now people see that he's not the great driver that people think he is, and people need to stop complimenting him when he does something like simply get into the 3rd part of qualifying!!

Posted by gsprings on 18/09/2010

i think this micheal shumacher comeback is going to be a failure to be honest, just don't see it,i think the copetition will just be to tough for him to overcome, the fact that mercedes basically could not improve their car all year is a bad sign

Posted by L Paredes on 18/09/2010

His comeback blighted by a car that wasnt able to perform?!
Win or lose he is still the "BEST"???!!!
Please...!!
The FACTS are:
Michael S 46 points
Nico Rosberg 112 points

Do I need to remind anyone that both drive the SAME car?!
I agree with John B, he's not one of the best 24 drivers in the world right now. By far.

Posted by Keith on 19/09/2010

I agree with much posted, Michael is the greatest F1 driver I have had the pleasure of enjoying for many years. It makes me very annoyed at the negativety from the British press, including this web site and ex F1 drivers, mainly British directed at Michael. In Australia we call it the tall poppy syndrome. Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Nickie Lauda have not raced for a very long time, non of them achieved anything like Schumie, envy is a problem they all appear to suffer from. The war was over 60 years ago, poms get over it!

Posted by Karl Grass on 19/09/2010

It is tough to drive a car to victory that has been built according to the rule book. After driving illegal cars for the time he won and hitting contenders to prevent their victories, we now see him as he really is: an average F1 racer!
You are only as fast as your team driver allows. Despite that the car got changed to Michael's liking, he(still)gets beating quite heavily by Rosberg.

Posted by Guillermo Hoffmann on 19/09/2010

Hope he goes back to ride Superbikes!...

Posted by Filip from Croatia on 19/09/2010

I agree with all of You guys. I think Schumi will bounce back. I think Michael and Alonso are the most complete drivers at this moment, and I think the biggest problem is the concept of Mercedes GP car. Rosberg and Button have similar driving style, and there is the answer why is Rosberg slightly quicker than Michael. I think Michael is doing brilliant job if we consider he didn't drive on slicks las season,he signed contract in December and he is driving car that was designed for Jenson. Michael is a true sportsmen, legend and he has work ethic on highest level, and I think he wants to show new generation drivers like Vettel,Hamilton,Kubica,Sutil that he is still the quickest in F1. I knew on the start of the season that Rosberg is very talneted and intelligent driver. I think he is in range with Kubica and Hamilton. Just remember what he did in Williams. But as I said, I am 100% sure that Michael will be fighting for victories next season because team will design car for his preference

Posted by ck on 19/09/2010

Michael your will always be the best for us! Those people that do not understand what F1 is the just open their mouth and say .... There are hundreds of reasons that caused you lack of performance and good results. We DO NOT NEED to explain to those saying .... what are these reasons.

Posted by Maria Cardoso on 19/09/2010

When Michael announced his retirement in 2006, it was a severe blow to my interest in the sport, but I watched if I had nothing better to do. Intense interest came back with Michael's return, and quite honestly, it is going to be twice as hard the second time Michael leaves.
This is not Brasil, but I live in a Portuguese-speaking country that was as fanatical about Senna as Brasil, and when he died, I saw these people simply switch off and never look at another F1 race - to this day. I couldnt understand them then, but I do understand them now.

Posted by eurit35 on 20/09/2010

There is not much philosophy behind Schu's return... Mercedes thought they made great marketing move, he thought he will get the winning car... Neither proved correct. For some reason, Mercedes is not running as expected and Michael found himself in unfamiliar surroundings, where his cheating and bad attitude are not tolerated any more. Without hidden electronics, dirty tricks and help from his team-mate he suddenly ended there, where was always his place: 9th to 10th... He is equivalent of Mike Tyson in boxing - dirty, no style, with the head through the wall, if necessary. I deeply hope this most disgraceful driver in the history will realize his time is over and let normal people race. But the best lesson he ever got comes form his present team-mate: he showed no respect for elderly cheating false champion. And Jean Todt can not save his ass anymore, since he's been to involved in helping Ferrari win (FIA = Ferrari International Assistance). Guys, get realistic and forget him!

I think Eddie is still sore after Schumi left his team for Benetton that's why he always has a word for MS.

Everybody is entitled for an opinion and everybody think that they and only they know the truth... I wouldn't argue with those who blast Michael and his comeback - 7 World titles silence them better than I can. I join those who enjoy every moment, every lap we have the honor to witness again and hope it'll go as long as Michael wishes and there will be no "montezemolo" to make a decision for him. Looking back I always had a feeling similar to a swimmer, who senses danger in the water when the Great White shark is closing in and I believe, that's how all the guys who raced against Michael felt and are still feeling. Some of you guys are right - let's enjoy while we can and see if 2011 car will give Michael a chance to prove what does not need to be proved - The Legend of Michael Schumacher will outlive those who might read this!
Thank you, Michael for all the joy and excitement you gave me throughout those years and my best wishes to you and your lovely family!!!

schumi will bounce back.will take an another title for sure.guys don't take panic.we all know he is the best.we can't compare anybody with him.not even luis, fernando, mark, sebastian.michael is unique

Posted by Cristian Ferreira on 22/09/2010

we definitely schimi accompanied in his long racing career, we knew it would not be easy, come after three years of absence and win is virtually impossible, even more if it is a completely new car for him, but as a friend above, appears to be the envy of many evil, but who at the starting grid can say it was his best pilot in the world in the highest category of automobile seven times?

anyone ...

Posted by Jetracer on 23/09/2010

5 world championships. Can you take those away from him? Don't like the way he did any part of it> let's see you do it. Not talk, do.

Myself, I enjoy seeing him out there. I look forward to him hopefully staying with it and what he might accomplish. In any case, I think he is enjoying it also. Think of him as a plow horse that is more comfortable in harness than hanging out in a pasture.

He doesn't have to be the fastest, beat his team mate or set the the whole thing on fire again. Just being at it is enough for me.

Posted by hussam on 26/09/2010

Anyone who saw Michael after his last pit stop in Malaysian grand prix and saw his lap times can easily tell the reason Michael isn't winning this year is the no refuel policy. Michael can't drive a heavy car where tires wear out too fast. Bring back refueling and you'll see Michael get podiums.

Posted by usa on 27/09/2010

It's nice to see schumi back, most others young drivers look up to him, hey enjoy this legend while we can, win or not, afterall he already hold most records, what else we want from him, just sit back and watch him,

Posted by joe pinard on 27/09/2010

Eddie is just jeleous of old Mike because he can still do it and old Eddie can just talk about it! Old Ed when last did you and big mouth Martin Brundle did some use full driving in any competition like at a church Fete or something like it because a dont think you will be able to beat the kids

Posted by rahulkhush arora on 27/09/2010

Schumi and formula one, they are like body and soul. Formula one is nothing without his presence , and it is because of his presence that younger drivers of today are performing well this season. they are getting the much needed moral boost, plus the tips from Schumi in the pit lanes are all what they need to nurture their talents and ya even we f1 fans feel happy seeing our favorite man on track! we all should enjoy all what Schumi brings to us as always without much fuzz ...
